We are bringing back an old tradition that has some fun history behind it.  Salt makes everything taste better…it’s just that simple.  The use of salt cellars (also known as salt keepers, open salts and salt pigs) was documented as early as Classical Rome.  In the Middle Ages, elaborate large salt cellars were prominently displayed at the head table as a sign of status and prosperity.  The social status of guests could be measured by their position relative to the salt cellar:  high-ranking guests sat above the salt  while those of lesser importance sat below the salt.

The Industrial Revolution in the late 18th to early 19th centuries rendered both salt and salt cellars commonplace.  In 1925 pressed glass manufacture became a thriving industry.  Salt cellars were so easy to mold that they became one of the earliest items mass-produced by this method.

Eventually, because of the introduction of anti-caking agents in table salt by Morton Salt in 1911, their use began to decline in favor of salt shakers .  The little girl with the umbrella and the slogan “When it rains, it pours” means exactly that…when it is damp and wet outside, your salt won’t clump.

SO HAVE SOME FUN WITH YOUR TABLE SALT AND SHARE A LITTLE HISTORY TRIVIA WITH YOUR GUESTS!
